How to Make a Creamy Homemade Caramel Latte at Home

Many of us love a good morning coffee, especially flavored lattes like a caramel latte. If you work from home or don’t live near a coffee shop, making a latte at home is easy. Most espresso drinks share the same basic structure—espresso, steamed milk, and a little foam—so once you know the steps you can create any flavored latte you like.

I learned the menu working my first job at a coffee shop. At first it felt overwhelming, but with practice it became second nature. Today I’ll walk you through a simple method for making a caramel latte. The same steps apply for other flavored lattes—just swap the caramel for your preferred syrup.

Below I describe the process using an espresso machine, and I also include a quick no-espresso option for those using a regular coffee maker.

What you’ll need

  • Espresso (1–2 shots depending on strength preference)
  • Steamed milk, heated to around 140°F (60°C)
  • Caramel syrup (adjust amount to taste)

Start by adding the caramel syrup to your cup. I usually pour enough to cover about 1/4 inch of the bottom—add more or less depending on how sweet you like it.

Prepare 1–2 shots of espresso according to your machine’s instructions. While the espresso is brewing, steam your milk. Use a steaming pitcher and wand if you have one, and a thermometer if you like precision. Most coffee shops heat milk to about 140°F. For a latte, avoid creating too much foam: keep the steam wand lower in the milk so you add texture without excessive froth.

Once the espresso and steamed milk are ready, pour the espresso over the caramel in the cup. Hold back the foam with a spoon or spatula and pour the milk in, allowing just a small layer of foam to top the drink. Stir briefly to incorporate the caramel syrup from the bottom, then enjoy.

If you don’t have an espresso machine, you can still make a tasty flavored latte. Add the syrup to your cup, brew strong coffee with a regular coffee maker, and heat milk in the microwave or on the stove. Combine the coffee and warmed milk for a drink similar to a café au lait—less intense than espresso-based lattes but still delicious.

Cuisine: American

Servings: 1

Prep Time: 5 mins • Cook Time: 5 mins • Total Time: 10 mins

Make an easy homemade caramel latte with just three ingredients.

Ingredients

  • Espresso (1–2 shots)
  • Steamed milk
  • Caramel syrup

Instructions

  1. Pour caramel syrup into the cup, filling about 1/4 inch of the bottom.
  2. Pull 1–2 shots of espresso. While the espresso brews, steam milk to about 140°F (use a thermometer if available).
  3. Pour the espresso over the syrup. Hold back the foam and pour in milk, allowing a small amount of foam to top the drink. Stir to combine the caramel and enjoy.

Notes

  • For a latte, aim for mostly steamed milk with minimal foam. Cappuccinos have a higher foam ratio.
  • If you lack an espresso machine, use strong brewed coffee and warmed milk for a similar, satisfying drink.
