What is a stromboli?

A stromboli is pizza dough rolled around fillings such as meats and cheese, baked until the crust is golden and the interior is hot and melty. It’s commonly sliced and served with a side of pizza or marinara sauce for dipping.

Ingredients

To make this stromboli you’ll need:

  • Pizza dough – Store-bought refrigerated pizza dough is recommended for convenience, though homemade dough works too.
  • Spices – Garlic powder and onion powder for seasoning the dough.
  • Cheese – Shredded sharp cheddar is used here; Swiss or mozzarella are good alternatives.
  • Ham – Thinly sliced deli ham.
  • Egg – One beaten egg for an egg wash to seal and glaze the crust.

How to Make

This ham and cheese stromboli is quick and easy to prepare.

1. Line a large cutting board with parchment paper. Place the pizza dough on the parchment and roll it into an approximately 8×12″ rectangle.

2. Sprinkle garlic powder and onion powder evenly over the dough.

3. Evenly distribute half of the shredded cheese over the seasoned dough, leaving a 1″ border on three sides and a 1½” border on one of the longer sides.

4. Layer the ham evenly over the cheese, then sprinkle the remaining cheese on top, still leaving the plain border of dough.

5. Brush the beaten egg around the border and reserve the remaining egg wash.

6. Starting at the shorter 1″ side, roll the dough tightly like a jelly roll until you have a long loaf.

7. Press the egg-washed border to seal and place the stromboli seam-side down in the center of the parchment. Pinch the ends together and tuck them underneath to secure.

8. Slide a rimmed baking sheet under the parchment, brush the remaining egg wash over the outside, and cut 3–4 shallow slits across the top to allow steam to escape.

9. Bake in a 400°F oven for 15–20 minutes, until the crust is golden and the dough is cooked through.

10. Remove from the oven and let the stromboli rest for 10 minutes. Slice and serve warm with your preferred dipping sauce.

  • Marinara or pizza sauce

  • Honey mustard
  • Pesto

Storing Leftovers

Wrap leftover stromboli tightly in foil and refrigerate for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven until warmed through to maintain a crisp crust and melty interior.

Tips and Tricks

  • If you prefer, use canned refrigerated pizza dough to make rolling easier. Choose regular, not thin crust, and roll to the same dimensions.
  • To prevent sticking, lightly flour your cutting board before rolling the dough, then transfer it to parchment for baking.
  • Make shallow slits across the top before baking so steam can escape and the filling heats evenly.
