When Scott and I travel to major international cities, we make a point of seeking out memorable bars—especially rooftop spots or places with outstanding views. In Kuala Lumpur we wanted both a great view and a stylish setting. After looking into our options, we discovered a common trade-off: many rooftop bars didn’t offer the iconic skyline angle, while some indoor venues had a spectacular view. We chose the indoor option that promised the best sightlines.
Our hostel receptionist recommended SkyBar as one of the city’s top bars, praising its atmosphere and the view of the Petronas Towers. He warned us that drinks were expensive and suggested having a couple at the hostel first, and that we should dress smartly because of a dress code. That advice was relaxed in practice—other guests arrived in denim shorts or tees—but we still dug out one of the few clean, smart-looking outfits I keep for evenings out.
Arriving around sunset, we were surprised by the bar’s layout. Online photos create the impression that the whole venue offers sweeping views of the Petronas Towers, but in reality only one side of SkyBar faces the towers. That side features a row of cushioned booths with direct window views; these are in high demand and operate by a waiting list. The remainder of the bar sits away from the prime view.
We arrived just as dusk settled, added our names to the waiting list for a window booth, and took cheaper seats by the pool. The drinks menu made us swallow hard—the prices were steep compared with local standards—but we each ordered a glass of wine. Wine in Malaysia is relatively costly, and after months of preferring beer or cheap spirits, we savored every sip. Forty minutes passed with empty booths lined up along the glass; just as we were about to order another drink simply to pass the time, the maitre d’ called our name and led us to a window seat.

We ordered another glass each, took as many photos as we could without feeling foolish, and enjoyed the view of the illuminated towers. Mindful of the prices, we paid the bill before our evening could turn into an expensive indulgence and left while still in control of both wallet and dignity.
As we departed, a couple of fellow backpackers in travel trousers and slightly creased shirts took the cheaper seats we had vacated. The waiting list still showed many names ahead of them, so they would likely need to make a single drink last a very long time if they hoped to reach a window table. It’s a reminder that some experiences are accessible even on a tight budget, but they require patience and strategy.

If you want to experience SkyBar without overspending: go early and put your name on the waiting list; consider having a drink beforehand at a more affordable spot; share a single pricier drink between two people if you both want to admire the view; and be ready to move on once you’ve taken your photos and enjoyed the moment. A little planning lets you enjoy the city skyline without a prohibitively large bill.
