Learn how to make the easiest fluffy Christmas bows in minutes. A simple way to add style to wreaths, gifts, and other holiday décor.
Are you a crafter?
I try to be.
Really I do!
I have so many ideas running through my head. When I see décor for sale I often think, I can make that.
I’m inspired by projects on Pinterest, Instagram, and TikTok, but I’ll be honest—I’m not very patient, so I sometimes buy pieces instead of making them.
The interest is there though—I really want to be more creative and save some money while I’m at it. I also hate spending money on something that looks easy to make. Laughs.
Last year I refreshed my Christmas window greenery swags and made new bows for each one. You can see how I made simple single-loop bows in a previous post. I loved the red and black check plaid ribbon I used—it matched our black shutters perfectly.
This past summer we painted the house and the older bows didn’t coordinate as well with the new color scheme. No problem—I bought new spools of ribbon and updated my window swags to better match the refreshed exterior.

What Materials Do You Need to Make Bows?
These simple fluffy bows require a few basic craft supplies. You may already have some at home, but the short list below covers what I used.
Supply List for DIY Bows
Basic supplies to make multiple fluffy bows:
- Scissors
- Ruler
- Stapler (or hot glue/glue dots if preferred)
- Pipe cleaners or floral wire
- Wired ribbon (choose patterns and widths that match your décor)
You can use any ribbon pattern you love. I returned to tartan plaid because it brings a festive pop of red and coordinates well with many holiday styles. Wired ribbon is especially helpful because it’s easy to shape and holds its form.
S2M Tip: Use wired ribbon so you can easily manipulate and twist it to form a full bow.
How to Make Fluffy Bows with Wired Ribbon

I planned to repeat the single-loop method I used previously, but the new ribbon was narrower—2″ instead of 2½”—so the first bow looked small. To make fuller, fluffier bows I adjusted the method and added extra loops.
Step 1: Cut Your Ribbon

Cut your wired ribbon into pieces for loops and tails. For each bow I used three 16″ pieces for loops and one 24″ piece for the tail. If you plan to make many bows, cut all your pieces at once—for example, for 15 bows cut 45 pieces at 16″ and 15 pieces at 24″.
Step 2: Make Your Loops

Form each 16″ piece into a loop and secure the ends. I used a household stapler because it’s fast, but hot glue or glue dots work too. Pro tip: finish one step for all bows before moving to the next to speed up the process.
S2M Tip: Complete all cuts first, then secure all loops, then assemble—this makes the project quicker and neater.
Step 3: Assemble Your Bow

Stack three stapled loops on top of each other, aligning their centers. This layered arrangement creates a fuller bow once you secure and fluff it.
Step 4: Create Your Bow Tails

Place a 24″ ribbon piece underneath the stacked loops so its center aligns with the loop centers. This becomes the tail of the bow. Then use a pipe cleaner or floral wire to secure the entire bundle through the center.
Step 5: Fluff and Attach Your DIY Bow

Crumple the loops and tails toward the center, then wrap and twist the pipe cleaner or wire tightly to hold everything in place. If you use green pipe cleaners they’ll blend in with greenery and stay less visible.

Once secured, spread and shape the loops until the bow is as fluffy as you like. Trim the tails into a V-shape or any style you prefer. The pipe cleaner also gives extra length for attaching the bow to wreaths, swags, garland, or a sled display.

Wired ribbon lets you bend tails so they lay perfectly against your greenery or other decor. The updated tartan plaid added some white to coordinate with our lighter shutters and the extra loops made the bows fuller and more eye-catching.

Tips to Make the Best Christmas Bows

- Use wired ribbon for easier shaping and a lasting fluffy look.
- Make larger bows with longer ribbon pieces and smaller bows with shorter pieces.
- Add more loops for extra fullness.
- Combine different colors or patterns for a layered, dimensional bow.
- Match your ribbon choices to the colors and style of your holiday décor.
Creative Ways to Use DIY Bows on Christmas Greenery

Attach a fluffy bow to a wreath using floral wire, a twist tie, or a pipe cleaner. Burlap ribbon gives a natural, rustic vibe, while plaid adds a cozy traditional look.

Use bows on wreaths, window swags, garlands, or on a faux bushel of greens on a vintage sled. Bows also work beautifully as tree toppers or hung among branches as oversized ornaments.

Ideas for Decorating Your Holiday Home with Handmade Bows
Make a batch of bows to decorate mantels, shelves, staircases, doorways, or a fireplace mantel. They’re an inexpensive way to add a cohesive, festive look throughout your home.
Jazz Up Your Gift Wrapping with DIY Bows
Match ribbon to your wrapping paper and use a large fluffy bow as the focal point. Instead of leaving a long tail, you can wrap the ribbon around the box and secure the ends underneath, or attach the finished bow with double-sided tape.
