Permaculture Kitchen Launch: Plans, Timeline, and What to Expect

We have made significant progress on my book since the last update.

The design, layout and proofreading are complete. The files were sent to the printers in Aberystwyth on Friday, and the pages have already been printed. They now need to be trimmed, folded, stitched and bound into the covers. I expect the finished books to be ready within a week, after which it will take a short time for retailers such as Amazon to receive stock. I hope to visit the printers to photograph the final stages and will share those if possible.

Book launch at the Edible Garden Show

The Permaculture Kitchen will be launched at the Edible Garden Show at Alexandra Palace in North London on Saturday, March 29th. I will give a talk and answer questions in the Expert’s Theatre from 15:10, and I’ll be available at the Permaculture Magazine stand before and after the talk to sign books. Please come by and say hello — I’d love to meet you.

Signed copies

Signed copies will be available from a dedicated section of my website. I’m setting up payment through PayPal and arranging the store to make ordering simple. I’ll announce when signed copies can be purchased.

The Permaculture Kitchen online resources

Alongside the book I’m building an online section with videos demonstrating techniques and recipes from the book, plus additional resources to help you apply the ideas. I’ll ask for suggestions from readers about what would be most useful and will add content regularly.

Testimonials

The back cover features an excerpt from a generous testimonial by Thane Prince. I’ve also had support from Alys Fowler, Diana Henry, Elisabeth Luard, Charlie Hicks and Françoise Murat. The full testimonials will be published in the special book section when it goes live.

Here are some extracts from those endorsements:

Alys Fowler, gardener, author and TV presenter
The simple, honest economy of a kitchen is what turns a house into a place with heart. And that all starts with a good meal that enriches the eater as much as their environment. Carl is a patient and generous teacher and this book teaches us how to make our own recipes as much as it is about following his.

Diana Henry, author and food writer
I just love the spirit of this book. It’s not just a cookbook, it’s a great approach to food and to life. Carl shows you how to get pleasure from the fundamental things. Perfect for food DIYers who want to go beyond just making gravlax, this is timely, sane, caring and delicious.

Thane Prince, author and cookery tutor
A thought-provoking and interesting book, it is structured with basic recipes and building blocks which offer a myriad of variations. There are options that would work for any cook: beginner to competent, vegan to carnivore — not an easy task.

Elisabeth Luard, author and broadcaster
Here is an inspirational kitchen how-to, by a hands-on gardener and forager for anyone who wants to live sensibly and well, whether on a permaculture smallholding or in the heart of a city.

Charlie Hicks, radio and TV personality
The Permaculture Kitchen takes a holistic, at times spiritual, approach to producing and cooking your own food but balances that with a very practical, down-to-earth attitude. It’s full of recipes that make you want to cook and that work when you do — clearly written, beautifully photographed and easy to follow. Often a basic recipe is followed by variations so one core method builds into a range of dishes, an excellent way to deal with every grower’s perennial problem: the glut. The Tips and Preserving chapters are packed with useful ideas for handling surplus. If you grow your own food or want to and care about what you eat, this splendid book deserves a place in your kitchen.

Françoise Murat, landscape designer and teacher
I urge you to buy this book, for its simplicity of seasonal life and its richness in bringing variety to your cooking.
