Thanksgiving Dinner Ideas Using Dollar Tree Finds

Deliciousness On a Budget

Stuffing, mashed potatoes, and Thanksgiving veggies covered in gravy on a white plate.

If you need to stretch your food budget this holiday season, you can prepare a full, comforting Dollar Tree Thanksgiving Dinner for roughly twenty-five dollars. This menu covers classic favorites—turkey and gravy, stuffing, buttery mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, and candied yams—while relying mostly on affordable, accessible ingredients. The dishes come together quickly and taste great.

The recipes use a few basic pantry staples such as onion and garlic powder, salt, and pepper. A printable recipe card is included below with a concise shopping list and step-by-step directions. You can print or screenshot that card, or keep it open on a phone or tablet while you cook.

Gas Station Gourmet

Earlier in my work with communities facing food insecurity, I taught low-cost cooking classes and developed a concept called Gas Station Gourmet. At the time, the neighborhood had only a single walkable gas station offering basic groceries. I learned to create simple, reasonably healthy meals that could be made without a full kitchen. It was a challenge at first, but I found that a few creative swaps and accessible ingredients could yield satisfying results.

Introducing Dollar Tree

When a Dollar Tree arrived in that community, the range of available ingredients improved dramatically. With some fresh and frozen options added to pantry items, I could expand recipes and offer even more variety. Recently I’ve enjoyed seeing creators on social platforms demonstrate budget meals, so I tested this Dollar Tree Thanksgiving menu myself. The result: a traditional holiday spread that cost about twenty-five dollars and tasted wonderful.

This project reminded me how much can be done with a little planning and inexpensive ingredients.

Green Bean Casserole

The Dollar Tree green bean casserole turned out very well. While I have a more elaborate version on my site, this simpler version is satisfying in its own right. It uses canned green beans, cream of mushroom soup, and boxed stuffing mix for an easy casserole that bakes to bubbly perfection.

If you want to upgrade it with items you may already have at home, consider adding any of the following:

  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • An extra can of cream of mushroom soup
  • Sautéed onions
  • French fried onions for topping
  • 2 tablespoons heavy cream or milk stirred into the soup
  • A pat of real butter on top

Mashed Potato Heaven

The instant mashed potatoes from Dollar Tree were surprisingly good. For an even creamier result, add a bit of butter and cream if your budget allows, but they are tasty as prepared. As written on the recipe card, substituting chicken broth for water when reconstituting the potatoes adds extra flavor.

Help the Stuffing

The stuffing was the only item I found merely “fine” in this lineup. It works well in a pinch, but if you have a little extra in the budget, adding cooked crumbled sausage and sautéed onions and celery will transform it. For those who love a more traditional stuffing, a slightly pricier homemade recipe will deliver greater depth of flavor.

All-Around Delicious

Overall, this meal was delightful. I forgot to buy rolls, but those are available at Dollar Tree as well. I particularly enjoyed the canned turkey and gravy—the turkey tasted like real turkey and the gravy was flavorful. Served together, these dishes present like a full holiday meal; guests likely wouldn’t guess it came from budget ingredients.

I’d gladly prepare and donate these meals to people in need. It’s encouraging to see other creators promoting accessible, affordable cooking—small adjustments and thoughtful seasoning make a big difference.

Ingredients

  • Dollar Tree Shopping List:
  • 2 packets Idahoan Buttery Homestyle Mashed Potatoes
  • 2 packets Pioneer Roasted Turkey Gravy
  • 2 cans Bruces Yams in syrup
  • 1 can Libby’s Chunk Pineapple
  • 1 can Campbell’s Cream of Mushroom Soup
  • 2 boxes McTrader Stuffing Mix for turkey
  • 2 cans DelMonte Harvest Cut Green Beans
  • 4 to 6 cans Harvest Creek Chunk White Turkey in Water
  • 2 cans Swanson Chicken Broth
  • 1 box Domino Brown Sugar
  • 1 small bottle olive oil
  • Pantry items often available at Dollar Tree:
  • Dried parsley
  • Garlic salt
  • Onion powder
  • Black pepper
  • Salt
  • Poultry seasoning

Instructions

Green Bean Casserole:

  1. Drain the two cans of green beans into a bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, combine the can of cream of mushroom soup with 1/3 cup chicken broth and half a box of stuffing mix. If your stuffing mix separates the seasoning packet, mix that in with the bread cubes.
  3. Add the soup-stuffing mixture to the green beans along with 1 teaspoon onion powder, 1 teaspoon garlic salt, black pepper to taste, and 2 teaspoons dried parsley. Toss to coat.
  4. Transfer to a small baking dish. Sprinkle the remaining stuffing mix on top and drizzle with olive oil.
  5. Bake uncovered at 375°F for 35 minutes.

Candied Yams:

  1. Drain the cans of yams and place in a bowl; cut into bite-sized pieces if needed.
  2. Add 1/4 cup brown sugar and 1/4 cup pineapple juice from the canned pineapple.
  3. Stir in 1 tablespoon olive oil and toss to coat.
  4. Season lightly with onion powder, garlic salt, and black pepper. Place in a small baking dish.
  5. Bake at 375°F for 35 minutes.

Mashed Potatoes:

  1. Prepare the instant mashed potatoes according to package directions, substituting chicken broth for the water to boost flavor.
  2. Finish with a drizzle (about 2 teaspoons) of olive oil.

Stuffing:

  1. Prepare stuffing per package directions, using chicken broth instead of water and olive oil in place of butter.
  2. Stir in 1 teaspoon each onion powder and garlic salt, black pepper to taste, 1 teaspoon dried parsley, and 1/2 teaspoon poultry seasoning.
  3. For a crisp top, transfer to a baking dish, drizzle with olive oil, and bake at 375°F for 20 minutes.

Turkey and Gravy:

  1. Drain the canned turkey, reserving the turkey juices.
  2. In a deep skillet, heat 1 tablespoon olive oil and add the turkey. Season with onion powder, poultry seasoning, garlic salt, black pepper, and parsley—start light and adjust to taste. Sauté for a few minutes.
  3. Prepare the packaged gravy mix using the reserved turkey juice in place of some or all of the water called for on the packet. Add extra chicken broth or water if needed to reach the required liquid amount.
  4. Pour the prepared gravy into the turkey skillet and simmer until the gravy reaches the desired thickness, thinning with more broth if necessary.
  5. Serve the turkey and gravy over bread, rolls, or mashed potatoes.
  6. Serve pineapple alongside the meal; cranberry sauce or jell‑o are optional if available.
